NIA Denies Ghana Card Fee Hike, Says Revised Charges Approved by Parliament

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has rejected reports that it has recently increased Ghana Card registration fees, clarifying that the current charges were approved by Parliament and took effect in February 2026.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, August 19, the NIA said reports suggesting that it had unilaterally introduced or increased fees for Ghana Card registration and related services were misleading.

According to the Authority, the revised fees were approved under the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025 (L.I. 2512), pursuant to the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080). The revised fee regime took effect on February 2, 2026.

The NIA further clarified that its 276 district offices across the country remain fully operational and continue to provide Ghana Card registration and related services.

At the regular district offices, first-time registration remains free for applicants below 25 years. Those aged 25 and above are required to pay a GH¢30 processing fee.

The Authority also stated that card replacement costs GH¢200, while record updates remain free. Other charges apply to services including card renewal, nationality updates and related transactions.

The NIA also addressed concerns surrounding the introduction of its new 24-hour Prestige Centre, stressing that the facility does not replace its regular registration centres.

The first Prestige Centre, located at Labone, began operations on August 1, 2026, and operates around the clock, including weekends. The Authority described it as an optional, fee-based service designed to offer greater convenience, flexibility and faster access to services.

The NIA said members of the public who do not wish to use the premium service can continue accessing applicable Ghana Card services at the regular district offices.

It explained that the premium and prestige services are intended for people who specifically want the additional convenience and service experience.

The Authority has urged media organisations, commentators and the public to rely on the approved fee schedule and information from authoritative sources when discussing Ghana Card charges.

It warned that misinformation about national identification services could create unnecessary confusion and concern among the public.

The NIA said it remains committed to transparency, accountability and accessible identity services.

It has also directed members of the public seeking clarification on Ghana Card registration, fees and related services to its official website or contact centre for assistance.
